As we come to the end of the calendar year, our thoughts naturally meander to moments during the year that made an impact on us. Good times and challenging times, we tend to reflect on the significant events and glaze over the other bits in between.
But December can offer us a chance to review where we are in our life plan; where we get an opportunity to recalibrate; to check our direction and change course for where we want to go.
So now that I have your attention, why not chose to do a review of the year in terms of how your personal projects or plans went. Did you achieve what you set out to do in 2018? What went well for you? Make sure to celebrate your successes, the big ones and the little ones, as each win is another step to achieving your goal.
Were there parts of your plan that didn’t work out the way that you had hoped? Occasionally we can get distracted or diverted by events that were out of our control, this is part of the natural process of life, these events can be opportunities for growth and learning. It is important to identify them but don’t be beaten by them.
When reflecting on your year, have you noticed aspects of your life that you need to step back from or stop completely? Sometimes unhealthy or unproductive habits can creep into our lives without being aware of them. When you take the time, become aware of what is taking from your personal progress and explore ways on how you can change this.
My most important question for you- have you had fun this year? Sometimes we can be so focussed on the practical goals that we can forget to stop and appreciate the experience. What is it that fills your cup with joy? It would be a good idea to write down a list of things that energise you or bring you joy. It can be spending time with people, going for a walk on the beach, reading a good book or playing with your children. Be sure to build more of these in your plan for next year as we know that all work and no play make us very dull indeed!
If it has been a particularly tough year for you please remember that the year is nearly over and 2019 is just around the corner. Remind yourself that this struggle will pass, keep your focus on the future and open your heart to receive love and support. Get help if you need it, there are many people out there who would love to be part of your life.
Looking forward to 2019, do you have a picture of what you would like to happen for you? Treat yourself and buy a journal to keep note of all your thoughts and dreams and goals for the future, it will help you get clarity and keep your focus on the year ahead. Happy Christmas and Best Wishes for the New Year.
